Program Philosophy

We, the teachers, administration, and the board of education believe that the Greene County Tech School District PACE Program exists for the benefit of the students. The school is committed to assisting each student to acquire the skills, understanding, ideas, values, and attitudes necessary for him to achieve his highest possible personal development. This commitment includes identifying and meeting the needs of the gifted and talented students.

Gifted and talented students are those students identified as possessing outstanding ability and/or potential. These students require qualitatively differentiated educational programs and/or services beyond those provided by the regular school program.

The gifted and talented program exists to provide appropriate services for students identified as such. It is the goal of the program to instill within the students a desire for excellence and a sense of individual responsibility to himself, the school, and community, and to a changing society.

OUR DEFINITION

Gifted and talented children and youth are those of high potential or ability whose learning characteristics and educational needs require qualitatively differentiated educational experiences and/or services.

Possession of these talents and gifts, or the potential for their development, will be evidenced through an interaction of (1) above average ability, (2) task commitment, and/or (3) creative ability.

Curriculum Frameworks

To understand the nature of the curriculum for the PACE program, one must be aware of the planning that preceded curriculum decisions. The curriculum structure is designed based on our philosophy of gifted and talented education, our definition of a gifted and talented student, our identification procedures, our broad program goals, and our student process goals.

The Greene County Tech School District curriculum has been designed in line with the Arkansas Department of Education, Program Approved Standards for Gifted and Talented. The Gifted and Talented Staff worked with the Northeast Arkansas Educational Cooperative Gifted and Talented Specialist and the Gifted and Talented personnel from the member schools to develop the Gifted and Talented Frameworks. In addition, the Core Process Goals for Gifted and Talented seminars are incorporated into the curriculum offerings.

The five areas emphasized include:

  • Creative Thinking
  • Critical Thinking
  • Independent Learning
  • Communication
  • Affective Development

The Greene County Tech School District is configured into six different buildings – [Primary (P), Elementary (E), Intermediate (I), Middle School (M), Junior High (JH), High School (HS)]. The GCT Gifted and Talented faculty met to determine the inclusion for each skill and the types of activities to be used. The code used to indicate skill level is as follows – [Introduce (I), Develop (D), and Expand Proficiency (EP)].

To better understand the framework document please begin with the Framework Preface. It outlines the creation of the document and defines the specific areas of the document.
